One of the most common questions self-employed people ask is: “Can I get health insurance right now?” The answer depends on whether you’re in an enrollment window. Here’s what you need to know.
Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
Open Enrollment is the annual window when anyone can enroll in, change, or drop an ACA Marketplace plan. It typically runs November 1 through January 15 each year (dates can vary by state). Coverage from a plan chosen in November or December usually starts January 1.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Outside of Open Enrollment, you can still get coverage if you experience a qualifying life event. Common qualifying events include:
- Losing job-based health coverage
- Getting married or divorced
- Having or adopting a child
- Moving to a new coverage area
- Turning 26 and aging off a parent’s plan
You typically have 60 days from the qualifying event to enroll in a plan.
What If You Missed Both?
If you missed Open Enrollment and don’t have a qualifying event, short-term health plans or supplemental coverage may be available while you wait for the next Open Enrollment period. A licensed agent can walk you through every option.
