Being a 1099 contractor in Texas or Florida comes with a lot of freedom, but it also means you’re the CEO, the IT department, and the HR manager all rolled into one. When it comes to health insurance, many gig workers and independent consultants feel like they’re navigating a maze without a map.
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the "alphabet soup" of ACA, PPO, and HSA, you aren't alone. In states like Texas and Florida, where the market is huge and the options are plenty, it’s easy to trip over a few common hurdles that could cost you thousands in the long run.
Here are the 7 biggest mistakes 1099 contractors make and, more importantly, how you can fix them.
1. Hitting the "Subsidy Cliff" Without a Plan
One of the most painful surprises for successful 1099 contractors is the "Subsidy Cliff." This is a rule where your eligibility for tax credits (subsidies) on the ACA marketplace drops to zero once your income hits a certain level.
In the current landscape, that cliff sits at 400% of the Federal Poverty Level. For an individual, that’s roughly $64,000, and for a family of four, it’s about $132,000. If you earn even one dollar over that limit, you receive $0 in tax credits, meaning you are responsible for the full-price premium.
If you find yourself on the wrong side of the cliff, don't panic. You aren't stuck with a massive monthly bill just because you’re successful. Call Rachel at 512-850-6604 to see if a private plan might be a better fit for your budget.
2. Failing "The Big Three Filters"
To find the right plan, we always look through what we call "The Big Three Filters." Many contractors make the mistake of only looking at one.
- Tax History: ACA plans require you to show your tax records to qualify for credits. If your income fluctuates wildly or you don't have a steady tax history, you might struggle to get the pricing you expect.
- Pre-existing Conditions: ACA plans are the gold standard for covering pre-existing conditions. If you have a chronic illness, this filter is your top priority.
- The Subsidy Cliff: As mentioned, your income level determines whether the ACA is a bargain or a burden.
By ignoring these filters, you might end up in a plan that doesn't actually fit your financial or medical reality.
3. Thinking Short-Term Medical (STM) is Only for "Stopgaps"
Many people think Short-Term Medical (STM) is just something you buy for a month while you’re between jobs. While it is great for that, it can also be a high-quality nationwide PPO alternative for healthy 1099 workers who hit the Subsidy Cliff.

STM offers flexibility and freedom that many HMO plans can’t match. However, it’s important to remember that STM is NOT "Major Medical" or an ACA plan. It doesn't cover pre-existing conditions and isn't a permanent solution for everyone, but it can be a powerful "bridge" to affordable coverage if you don't qualify for subsidies.
4. Shopping by Premium Price Alone
It’s tempting to sort by "Price: Low to High" and click the cheapest option. But for a 1099 worker, the "cheapest" plan can become the most expensive the moment you actually need to use it.
A $0 premium plan often comes with a massive deductible and a very narrow network. If your favorite doctor in Austin or Miami isn't in that network, you’ll be paying out-of-pocket for every visit. Always look at the "Total Cost of Care", which includes your premium, deductible, and max out-of-pocket, before signing on the dotted line.
5. Confusing Navigators with Licensed Agents
This is a mistake that can leave you without the support you need when a claim gets complicated. There is a huge difference between a Healthcare.gov Navigator and a Licensed Agent like Michael Peck.
- Navigators: These are government-funded facilitators. They are there to help you fill out paperwork and navigate the website. However, they are legally barred from giving you actual advice or recommending one specific plan over another.
- Licensed Agents: An agent is your advocate. We provide expert advice, personalized recommendations, and year-round support. If you have a problem with a claim or need to change your coverage mid-year, you have a real person to call.
Why do it alone when you can have a professional in your corner for the same price? Call Rachel at 512-850-6604 to get started with an actual expert.
6. Not Factoring in "Income Guesswork"
As a contractor, your income is rarely a flat line. If you underestimate your income on your ACA application to get a bigger subsidy, the IRS will likely "claw back" that money when you file your taxes.
Conversely, if you overestimate, you might be paying way more for insurance than you need to. You need a strategy that accounts for the "lumpy" nature of 1099 income. We help our clients estimate their Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) accurately to avoid nasty surprises at tax time.

7. Forgetting to Bundle Ancillary Coverage
Health insurance is just one piece of the puzzle. Many 1099 contractors forget to protect their income with things like Accident, Hospital Indemnity, or Critical Illness coverage.
Think of it this way: if you break your leg and can't work for a month, your health insurance covers the doctor, but who covers your rent? Bundling these lower-cost "gap" plans can provide a cash payout directly to you, giving you the financial cushion you need while you recover.
Don't wait until an accident happens to realize you have a gap in your strategy. Call Rachel at 512-850-6604 and let’s build a plan that covers all your bases.
